We all have different tastes, and yes we can appreciate that yours may not sync with ours. Here are our 7 best feel good movies that are always gauranteed to get us out of a slump.
Some are classics, a couple are probably lesser known masterpieces that are sure to have you smiling while the credits role.
Without further ado, lets take a look at our 7 best feel-good movies.
#7 – Mamma Mia
What’s not to love about a musical movie with a stellar cast and a ton of ABBA songs? With its enjoyable premise, this feel-good movie will instantly take you to the Greek islands and put you in the summertime spirit of carefree fun. Sophia (Amanda Seyfried) invites three prospective grooms to her wedding in the hopes of identifying her father since she is more obsessed with finding him than with organizing her wedding.
#6 – BIG
Written by Gary Ross and Steven Spielberg’s sister Anne Spielberg and directed by Penny Marshall. It is a position that appeals to anyone who secretly believes they are frauds, unconvincing grownups, and essentially confused (or thrilled) young children. Hanks portrays Josh Baskin, a young man who dislikes the limits that are set for children. Josh wants he could grow up to be a man, but as they say, “Be careful what you wish for.”
Hanks was uniquely able to convincingly portray an adult with an adult presence but nonetheless possesses a child’s purity and joy. Try picturing Tom Cruise doing that to see how quickly a horror movie may develop. It is never better illustrated than in the moment with Hanks dancing joyfully on the keys of the enormous toy piano.
#5 – The Sandlot
Early 1990s movies were fantastic for children to watch. Critics be damned, “The Little Rascals” and “Little Giants” will always hold a special place in our hearts! But “The Sandlot” is the undisputed champion of that decade’s childhood favorites.
The movie is a coming-of-age tale about a mismatched group of adolescent boys in California who share a love of baseball and is set in the summer of 1962. No matter when you grew up, this video will transport you back to your youth with its nostalgia and everlasting sweetness. In addition to being a story about camaraderie, teamwork, and youthful mischief, “The Sandlot” is also a ton of fun.
#4 – Back To The Future
All movie lovers experience excitement as they watch Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and Doc (Christopher Lloyd) test time travel in a Delorean. Back to the Future was such a groundbreaking movie at the time, and it handled time travel very successfully. Marty’s plot with his mother Lea Thompson was a little strange, but it was still a sweet tale about reuniting the family.
A universal plot that is nicely woven together by time travel makes this a movie that can be seen multiple times. One of the most entertaining on-screen couples is Marty and Doc. For this first episode, the balance between Doc teaching the science to Marty and Marty acting as the voice of reason on the ground level was just right. Many streaming services offer Back to the Future.
#3 – Love Actually
“Love Actually” has a storyline for just about everyone, unlike the majority of the movies on this list, which all have a single, positive theme. This holiday favorite emphasizes the value of friendship, relationships, and family. Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Keira Knightley, Liam Neeson, and the late, great Alan Rickman are among the endearing ensemble cast. It’s the ideal romantic comedy to lift any holiday gloom. Who could ever forget Hugh Grant dancing to “Jump (For My Love)” when the Prime Minister came down the stairs?
#2 – Home Alone
John Hughes wrote and produced the 1990 American comedy hit Home Alone, which was directed by Chris Columbus and released by 20th Century Studios.
Eight-year-old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) gets his dream for his family to vanish when they leave him behind when they embark on a holiday trip to Paris.
He first enjoys being alone, but eventually meets two robbers named Harry and Marv, played by actors Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern, respectively. Eventually, Kevin uses a series of booby traps to outsmart them.
The only movie in the series to include more than one original cast member is the first sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
#1 – Shawshank Redemption
The Shawshank Redemption is a very gloomy movie overall, I guess. Tim Robbins’ character, Andy Dufresne, is wrongfully charged with murder and given a life sentence. Although he befriends Red (Morgan Freeman), he remains in a dull, colorless jail where the warden and guards are more corrupt than the prisoners. The score and the redemption arc, though, make this movie eligible to be included on my list of feel-good movies. Let’s start with the movie’s most obvious plot point, the redemption arc: the motivational tale of a guy who defies all odds to win his freedom and lead the life he desires.
But what supports this theme is the music. The song’s soaring refrain exhorts listeners to be resilient like Andy. If you didn’t already know, the composer Thomas Newman is my idol and deserving of much more recognition than he currently receives.
So what are you waiting for? If you’re in a slump and need some feel good moments, check out one of our best feel good movies from the list above!
